Meet Our Team

Bob Kingery, Co-Founder

Bob co-founded Southern Energy Management in 2001 with his wife, Maria, and currently serves as a jack of all trades helping improve and expand our fast-growing company. Bob has been involved with the sustainable energy industry for more than twenty years, and has extensive experience in business development and operations, manufacturing, product design, consultation and implementation. He has been a solar technician, solar engineer, plant engineer, and director of manufacturing.

Prior to starting SEM, Bob was part of the founding team of Burt's Bees and helped grow the company from revenues of less than $1 million to over $60 million in sales. As the director of manufacturing at Burt's Bees, he managed all aspects of manufacturing, purchasing, distribution, and materials management for the fast-growing personal care products manufacturer and distributor.

Bob and Maria are the devoted parents of their 7-year old son, Zach (commonly referred to as "little Bob"), who aspires to be a solar-racecar driving farmer/scientist when he grows up.

In his free time, Bob enjoys completing small home projects with Zach, watching NASCAR and hiking in nearby Umstead State Park.

Bob received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University, but his energy education started long before then. Looking back, Bob fondly remembers an old School House Rock episode that made an impression that has stayed with him over the years - and he can sometimes be heard singing the show's theme song around the office. (You can hear the "Energy Blues" song here.)

Maria Kingery, Co-Founder & Director of Cultural Development

Maria co-founded SEM in 2001 and serves as our chief visionary and director of cultural development. She also plays a key role in our team resources, marketing and business development efforts across all offices.

Prior to starting the company with Bob, Maria served as retail operations manager for Burt's Bees, where she helped create a business framework that led to increasing the availability of Burt's Bees products across the state and country, and opened the company's first retail store in Carrboro, NC. She also has sales and marketing experience in the commercial printing and business products industries.

Understanding that people are SEM's greatest asset, Maria is dedicated to bringing in the best. Not only is she responsible for building our top-notch team of sustainable energy professionals, but she also works hard at creating a balanced work environment where people are challenged to grow and develop to their full potential, personally as well as professionally. Last year, for example, she created a "Mind, Body and Soul" gift to the team at our Morrisville headquarters that included a lending library, a basketball goal in the parking lot, and a quiet meditation room where team members can go when they need to take a break from the high energy atmosphere that surrounds our fast-growing company.

Besides working to help Bob build SEM and do their part to make the world a better place for their grandchildren, Maria's favorite activities are cooking, reading, and dancing in the living room with Zach.

Maria holds a BA in English Literature from NC State University.

Chad first came to SEM as an electrical contractor to assist on a one-megawatt project for QVC (the shopping network) in Rocky Mount, NC. Wanting to make a difference in the renewable energy field, he decided to stay with us and take on more megawatts in the future!

A mountain and beach lover, Chad spends time traveling and enthusiastically enjoys his surroundings - no matter where he happens to be. He loves skiing and golf and is a season ticket holder to Carolina Hurricanes games!

JJ Froehlich, Operations Manager

JJ is a project and materials manager, overseeing operations and scheduling for our solar installation teams in Morrisville. JJ brings a ton of great experience in both commercial and military operations to his role. At SEM, he is thrilled to be part of a true triple-bottom-line organization.

JJ comes to SEM as a self-proclaimed "military brat." He graduated from the US Air Force Academy with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and served as a tactical airlift pilot in the US Air Force for nine years. JJ went on to receive his MBA from UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School where he was awarded the Frank Hawkins Kenan Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Leadership. He has previously worked in operations management roles at MindWorks Multimedia, Modality, Dynamic Aviation and Johnson & Johnson.

In his free time, JJ likes to fly planes and plan his next home renovation project. He currently lives in a historic property that he renovated in downtown Durham. He also likes exploring the Bull City and proudly cheering on the Tar Heels in enemy territory.

Allison Torpey, Assistant Project Manager & Safety Monitor

Allison is an assistant project manager and safety monitor with our team in Charlotte. Her responsibilities include project scheduling and safety compliance, which are both tied into our team's broader goals to ensure a streamlined, user-friendly design and construction process for all of our solar clients. In addition to her bright outlook and sense of humor, Allison brings great experience and knowledge to our team. She holds a general contractor's license, is a LEED AP, and is working to achieve HERS Rater certification.

Before joining SEM, Allison worked as a construction crew leader with Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte, leading volunteer groups through all aspects of the building process. "I've always been more math and science oriented, but I also have an artistic side, so sustainable building design and construction is a great blend of both of those." Allison was also attracted to SEM because of the opportunity to be a part of the company's triple bottom line mission. Allison holds a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in Architecture from Wesleyan University.

In her free time, Allison enjoys swimming, running and biking, and trains for triathlons. When she's not working or working out, she unwinds by reading and playing her favorite musical instruments (classical piano and pipe organ).

Allison Arpin, Builder Services Liaison

As a member of our building science team, Allison connects builders and homeowners with solutions for improving energy efficiency, comfort and durability of new and existing homes in North Carolina.

Starting at an early age, Allison developed a passion for home building, taking weekend walks through homes under construction. On local summer mission trips as a teenager, she helped fix homes for low-income families who could not afford the repairs. This eventually led her to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, where she increased her knowledge and understanding of residential construction. Allison graduated from Elon University with a degree in Physics.

Joining SEM, Allison was able to mesh her interest in physics and problem-solving with her interest in construction to find a natural fit on the building science team. Working to make the world a better place to live is important to Allison, and she was happy to find out that everyone at SEM feels the same way!

When not working, Allison can be found biking or hiking with her two dogs, who are becoming familiar faces around our main office. She also enjoys spending time on her woodworking hobby. Next time you're in our Morrisville office, ask to see the holiday ornament she carved of the SEM logo - it's impressive!

Brittni Walker, Solar Administrative Support

As solar administrative assistant, Brittni processes the paperwork to complete solar jobs. She also handles the interconnection requests with the utilities to get the systems up and running. Brittni first heard about SEM when she saw Maria speak at an Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education conference and was eager to jump on board with the team. To hear more about what Brittni does for SEM in her own words, click here.

Brittni was the first to graduate with a degree in Environmental Studies from Meredith College, where she was an active volunteer. As vice president of Angels for the Environment, Brittni helped bring sustainability and clean energy awareness to the campus by organizing the first-ever Environmental Week. She also obtained an internship at the NC Department of Agriculture in the plant conservation office, which allowed her to travel across the state researching rare plant species. This work resulted in a published booklet and was the basis of her undergraduate research project.  Brittni appreciates all of the components of environmental conservation and how they all work together: “You can focus in on one thing but be interested in all of it.”

Brittni unleashes her creative energy by taking on projects like sewing, making jewelry or taking photographs of abstract nature scenes. She also loves to cook and prefers to rely on her own senses rather than following a recipe. On Sundays, Brittni can be found singing on the praise team at her church.

Charlene Allen, Builder Services Manager

Having spent the last five years serving builders and developers by managing sales for a building materials distributor and marketing company, Charlene brings a wealth of experience to SEM. She worked extensively on weatherization projects and led educational seminars on building practices, making for a seamless transition into green building. Charlene has been an active member in homebuilders associations of Lake Norman and Raleigh-Wake, Green Home Builders of the Triangle, and various other organizations. She was a co-owner of a home theater/security systems company based in Charlotte. Charlene graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Business Administration. To hear more about what Charlene does for SEM in her own words, click here.

Because of her experience in the home building community, Charlene found herself running into Southern Energy Management on a regular basis, and says she was always impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge of team members. "They help people do what they do better," Charlene says. "They have this synergy that I just wanted to be a part of."

When she's not helping builders find ways to be more efficient, Charlene enjoys spending most of her time with her husband shuttling around their two boys: they're active in the Boy Scouts of America, and play on baseball, football and basketball teams.  She also loves traveling with her family to the North Carolina Outer Banks.

James Froelicher, Warehouse Manager

James oversees everything that comes in and out of SEM's warehouse, from the PV and thermal panels to every piece of equipment that makes them work. To the untrained eye, it might look like organized chaos, but James knows that everything has its place and can tell you exactly where that might be. He also makes sure that SEM's biodiesel trucks stay running and always end the day with a full tank. Sometimes he finds himself helping out with other fun projects, like when he teamed up with Narayan to build the garden next to SEM's parking lot/basketball court.  To hear more about what James does for SEM in his own words, click here.

James graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a degree in culinary arts, which makes him particularly popular during company cookouts. Prior to joining the team, he worked for a junk removal company. He got to know a lot of the team before he was hired, and says he had been eying SEM for a while. "Everyone here is a master of their craft. They're really, really passionate about what they do; they want to come to work," James said. "Everyone's valued and everyone's valuable."

When he's not keeping tabs on the warehouse, James enjoys playing with his dogs, Ducati and Eleanor. He is also an avid motorcyclist and likes to garden and cook.

Bill Klotz, Home Performance Coordinator

When Bill joined the team, he was certainly no stranger to Southern Energy Management; in fact, SEM co-founder Bob Kingery was a student at Bill's very first energy efficiency training class almost a decade ago. At SEM, Bill is in charge of doing residential energy efficiency audits, finding ways customers can improve the comfort, health, durability and energy efficiency of their homes. A Master Certified Contractor, Bill is also a seasoned building scientist and a Certified Level I Thermographer (Infrared). He also holds Home Energy Rater and Building Performance Institute certifications. To hear more about what Bill does for SEM in his own words, click here.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Conservation of Natural Resources at NC State University, where he was a member of two ACC champion varsity wrestling teams.

Bill knew there was something special going on at SEM and kept his eye on the company from the beginning. “It has been wonderful to watch Bob and Maria grow this business on the shoulders of a wonderful staff through the culture they have created,” he said. Outside of work, Bill enjoys hunting with his two bird dogs, Jager and Cash, and cruising the roads on a Springer HD motorcycle.

Jocelyn Jordan, Electrical Design Support

Whatever Jocelyn draws, SEM crews can build. In her role with electrical design support, Jocelyn takes floor plans and comes up with the layout for solar thermal and PV systems to be integrated into commercial projects. Basically, her plans become the construction documents that the rest of the team refers to. Jocelyn came to SEM with almost ten years of experience in electrical design working for several firms in the Triangle area. She earned a BS in Electrical Engineering at NC State, and is a big fan of the Wolfpack.

With her engineering background, Jocelyn says one of the things that she loves about Southern Energy Management is the way the team takes advantage of everything at its disposal. "We try to find things that aren't being used and find another purpose, instead of throwing them away," she said. To hear more about what Jocelyn does for SEM in her own words, click here.

A North Carolina native, Jocelyn is originally from Gastonia. Outside of work, she enjoys reading and being with friends, especially if there's a BBQ grill involved. She also loves raising her year-and-a-half old dog, Sadie, and has the computer monitor wallpaper to prove it.

Bill Warren, Senior Building Science Project Manager

Bill's primary role at SEM is studying existing commercial, municipal and military buildings and figuring out ways the owners can improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality. A nationally recognized building science expert, Bill has conducted more than 1,300 residential, commercial and industrial building investigations. He also has developed and managed energy, indoor air quality and building performance projects for at least ten different organizations including the U.S. Department of Energy and the State Energy Office of North Carolina. From 2000 to 2003, Bill was the project manager for a crawl space research and commercialization program that was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy. He has extensive experience training others and is co-author of the design guide: Closed Crawl Spaces: An Introduction to Design, Construction and Performance.

Bill started working as a subcontractor consultant with SEM in 2007 due to his past work with Francis Conlin (another SEM building science expert with regional and national credentials) on a long history of projects. When not working, he actively pursues creative photography and in the evenings will tend to pull out his old guitar for a song or two.  To hear more about what Bill does for SEM in his own words, click here.

Christine Bowling, Accounting Staff

Christine handles all sorts of tasks at SEM, from accounts receivable/payable to pulling reports and training new team members in the accounting office. She arrived at SEM with 12 years of experience doing accounting for construction firms. That being said, she's been around the industry her entire life: her stepfather owned a construction company in Maryland where she grew up. She attended Massanutten Military Academy and also spent time at Frostburg State University and Montgomery College.

Coming to SEM represents a victory for Christine's personal beliefs; she says renewable energy is something she tried to promote at other jobs she's had before. "I was bringing in articles and pictures of solar hot water heaters, and they thought I was nuts," Christine said. "This is exactly what I was pushing."

She loves to read, but Christine says most of her time outside the office revolves around her 11-year old son, whether it's going to soccer practice or taking him to play paintball (she has gracefully bowed out of actively participating anymore, citing a desire to remain bruise-free). A cancer survivor, Christine is active in raising awareness for cancer research and spends a lot of time talking to cancer patients about what they can expect during treatment.

Mike Davis, Charlotte Business Manager

Mike oversees projects and day-to-day activities run out of SEM's Charlotte office, and he's got a background that's well suited for juggling the diverse responsibilities of building science, solar, and anything else that comes along. Prior to joining the team, Mike spent six years working on mixed-use urban design and historic preservation projects with a real estate developer. While there, he was a jack of all trades, doing everything from marketing to project management and contract negotiations. Before getting into that arena, Mike had a successful career in film and video production. Throughout all of those phases, he's always held management positions. Mike earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Winthrop University and a Masters of Media Arts from the University of South Carolina.

Mike first got into the real estate business because of his interest in historic preservation, and says that desire to do something beneficial led him to SEM. "I think it's the broader mission of sustainability," Mike said. "Very few people come to a realization of what they value. I discovered what that is and have a way to put my values to work every day at SEM."

Outside of work, Mike spends a lot of time with his family, especially with his 17-year old son. He also likes to hike, go bike riding and travel with friends.

Diane Butler, Chief People Person

Some companies call it "Human Resources" or "HR" - we call it People. In her role as Chief People Person, Diane serves as a central resource for SEM's growing team. Her role encompasses several duties, including: handling new hire processes and recruiting, being our benefits/insurance guru, making sure SEM is compliant with employment laws and Affirmative Action issues, and serving as a go-to person for all of our team members. Diane earned a business degree from the University of North Carolina, and has years of administrative experience in several office environments.

Diane has been interested in alternative energy for much of her adult life, and was familiar with SEM long before she joined the team; one of her daughters is dating our Warehouse Manager and has been friends with our Solar PV Project Manager's wife since high school.

Outside the office, Diane loves gardening and spending time with all three of her daughters. She and her husband can't seem to sit still at home: they've completely remodeled the last two houses they've owned. Diane has a passion for helping people with learning differences, too. "I always see the highest potential in people and live with that expectation," she said.
